‘Stop Using Mobile Phones At Night’ – Experts Warn

The expert was speaking on the sidelines of this year’s World Glaucoma Week (WGW) commemorated from March 12 to March 18, with the theme: “Beat Invisible Glaucoma”.

Charles said those who spent long periods of time on these devices and also computers should ensure they took breaks away from the devices and gadgets in order to protect the eyes from damage caused by excessive exposure to light.

“Working long hours on the computer can affect the eyes and vision. This can trigger a negative reaction to the eyes and cause headache, loss of concentration and ultimately predisposes one to develop Computer Visual Syndrome.

“If this continues on a long-term basis, it can lead to permanent damage to the eyes.

“Therefore, one should make efforts to wear protective eye glasses or use a computer screen so that the level of direct light to the eyes is reduced.

“When you work on the computer screen for long periods you should try to take a break from your work once in a while.

“From 20 seconds to about 20 minutes try to look at least 20 feet away and that way you break the continuous exposure of the light to your eyes which can result in damage to the element of vision.”

He also cautioned the public, especially those predisposed to or at risk of developing eye diseases against excessive consumption of alcohol.

Charles said consuming alcohol in excess quantity could affect the nerves of the eyes increasing the chances of damage to one’s vision.

The expert, who described alcohol as a depressant, said the substance once consumed overtime gave a feeling of euphoria and subsequently affected one’s thinking and coordination.

Charles said alcohol could only give such feeling to an individual because it worked through the nerves, adding that any substance that worked using the nerves could affect vision.

“For someone who already has a biological predisposition to glaucoma, taking alcohol or any other substance that can affect your nerves, thereby accelerating damage to the nerve of vision.

“Another thing to consider is the quantity of alcohol consumed by an individual and the level of concentration of this alcohol.

“Drug and substance abuse also have negative effects on the eyes; activities such as direct gaze at the sun can expose one to ultra-violent radiation.

“When moving outdoors, you should wear protective eye shade or a face cap to protect your eyes from this radiation because it can cause external growth within the eyes and can serve as a trigger for vision impairment.”

He listed other activities that could directly affect the eyes to include welding, adding that the iron particles caused direct trauma to the eyes.

1. Muscle fuel

Exercising generally causes your muscles to lose water. When these muscles don’t have enough water, you get tired easily. So, if you really want to make those rounds of exercise, try drinking water.

2. Kidney function

The kidneys process 200 quarts of blood in a day. It is used to transport urine to the bladder and also get out waste from our body. The kidneys need water to get what we don’t need out of our body system.

3. Hangover Help

For All Men: 7 Foods that will Give you More POWER During S.E.X

1. Find out which foods will spice up your SEX life!

With our crazy lifestyles these days, there are many factors that can contribute to a decrease in libido, including stress, toxicity from our environment and poor diet.

Poor libido often underlies a bigger issue like inflammation that can impair energy production and blood flow, both of which are important for a healthy sex drive. If this is a concern of yours, there are many steps you can take to get your body re-energized, including adding some key foods to your diet.

Although there are a number of so-called superfoods that specifically boost libido — we sometimes refer to these as “aphrodisiacs” — if your current diet is unhealthy, simply eating them may not give you the result you’re looking for. To boost libido organically requires that you obtain true health from within.

The good news is that you can incorporate some common foods into a healthy diet that will help to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow throughout the body, and raise your energy. In fact, these foods will not only help you feel better, they will also make you look better, which will do wonders for your libido (and act as natural aphrodisiacs).

2. Avocados –

Yes, avocados are high in fat, but they’re also high in healthy fats like omega-9 and omega-3. They’re anti-inflammatory, so they support a healthy cardiovascular system and blood sugar regulation. In addition, they’re high in fiber and rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, the fat-soluble vitamin K, folate, and B vitamins. They’re also a source of high-quality protein. To get a healthy dose of avocado, (rather than slathering guacamole on your beef burrito,) add avocado chunks to a tossed salad. The fats will help increase absorption of phytonutrients from your greens, carrots, and tomatoes.

3. Salmon –

Wild caught salmon is a great source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA that help maintain the fluidity of our cell membranes. They keep our cardiovascular systems healthy by reducing inflammation, preventing excessive blood clotting, and keeping fats in the blood at healthy levels (i). Salmon is great grilled, broiled, or added to an omelet or salad. The same omega-3 fats are also found in other fatty fish like tuna, black cod, halibut, and mackerel.

4. Watermelon –

Watermelon is rich in a chemical called citrulline (iv) that helps make nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels. It also contains the phytonutrient lycopene and beta-carotene, which act as antioxidants, protecting our cells. This is the perfect time of the year to enjoy it; don’t be afraid to eat the white part of the watermelon rind where much of the citrulline is found, either. To maximize the nutrients, (if you buy the fruit whole), leave it at room temperature until it’s cut, then store the leftovers in the fridge. Eat it right off the rind, in a fruit salad, or try it in this delicious gazpacho.

5. Nuts –

Nuts such as walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans are a good source of L-arginine which gets converted into nitric oxide. Walnuts also contain a plant-based omega 3 fat that’s necessary for a healthy cardiovascular system. Add a few to your morning oatmeal, add them to salads, or have a handful as an afternoon snack. Looking for a sweet treat? Try these truffles sweetened with raisins.

6. Leafy Greens –

Fresh spinach, kale, collards, arugula, mustard greens, as well as herbs like parsley and oregano contain high amounts of chlorophyll, which is purifying to the blood and helps to increase blood flow. Some, like kale, also contain essential fatty acids like omega 3 and 6. They’re a rich source of vitamins, including the fat-soluble A and K, and C, as well as minerals that keep the body rich in alkaline and improve energy levels. Eat them in salads, steamed, or juiced with other veggies and fruits.

7. Seeds – Click Next to See ALL

A zinc deficiency can impair testosterone production (v) as well as contribute to depression, which also inhibits libido. Seeds such as pumpkin and sesame are rich in zinc, as well as additional essential nutrients. Eat pumpkin seeds raw in trail mix or sprouted and seasoned. Sprinkle hulled sesame seeds over steamed vegetables, or eat them ground into tahini in hummus. Other options include having them in a dressing for salads, veggies, or fish.

8. Oysters

It’s not the slippery feel or the singular taste of oysters that make them a sexy superfood. It’s zinc, which oysters are loaded with. The mineral helps the body produce testosterone, a hormone critical in regulating women’s and men’s libido and sexual function.

Research suggests that zinc can improve sperm count and swimming ability, and increase sexual potency in men.

For women, zinc may help ovaries—the source of estrogen, progesterone, and some testosterone—stay healthy, keeping you primed for bedroom action. Incorporating these foods into your everyday diet can be easy, tasty and keep your libido and your overall health active and alive.

Dangers Of Cleaning Your Ear With Cotton Swabs

Cotton Swabs

Ear hygiene is important, it is necessary that we clean our ears to avoid the buildup of wax in the ear which can, in turn, lead to ear blockage.

However, there are many methods that we can use to clean the ear, to get rid of the excess wax in your ears, you need the help of a cleaning material such as cotton bud.

Also, in the bid to ensure the cleanliness of the ears, it is essential that we do it the right way. Do not insert sharp objects into your ear so that it will not undergo damage.

Some people make use of hair pins, tweezers, pens and pencils, straws, paper clips and even toys in cleaning their ears but all these are not really good for the ears.

Do not use pins, needles, and other harmful material to clean the ear. The best material to use is a cotton swab. However, one needs to be careful with its use because there are also certain dangers that are attached to its use.

A cotton swab is a small piece of absorbent material that we can use to clean the ears. We can also use it to clean wounds or take samples of body fluids.

Although, using a cotton swab ensures the neatness of the ear and helps us to avoid the buildup of earwax, also, they seem harmless. But it also has some bad sides.

The dangers of using cotton swabs in cleaning the ears include the following;

1. Using cotton swabs can be dangerous to the ears, especially if it is not used properly. It could also cause hearing loss or a cause a damage to the ear canal or eardrum.

2. Also, a cotton swab can drive earwax up against the eardrum and this is actually dangerous. This can rupture the eardrum or can cause an impaction that will lead to hearing loss.

3. Also, when you remove earwax constantly, it can cause dryness to the ear.

4. It can also cause hearing loss.

Humans can live for weeks and sometimes months without food. Going without water, however, is a different story…

Two-thirds of the human body (by weight) consists of water. Humans need water for circulation, respiration, and converting food to energy. After oxygen, water is the body’s most important nutrient. Quite simply, you need water to live.

Your body loses water constantly through sweat, urine, and even breathing. You must replace the water your body loses for your organs to continue to work properly. Dehydration occurs when your body doesn’t have enough water, because you’re losing more water than you’re taking in.

In extreme heat, an adult can lose almost 1.5 litres of water through sweat alone. Without water, dehydration can set in within an hour in severe heat. The combination of physical overexertion and extreme heat, without water, can lead to death in as little as several hours.

Surprisingly, it’s also easy to become dehydrated in very cold environments. Since cold air cannot hold much moisture, it dehydrates your body with every breath you take. Even if you aren’t sweating, you still need to replenish fluids even in cold weather.

So how long can you survive without water? Humans in average shape and perfect conditions (not too hot or cold) can probably live for three to five days without any water if they’re not physically exerting themselves. Healthier people can live a day or so longer, while those who are unhealthy or exposed to particularly hot or cold weather may not survive as long.

To stay healthy, you need to continually replenish your fluid supply. Experts recommend drinking approximately eight glasses of water each day. Of course, if you live in an extremely hot or cold area, or if you exercise a lot, you may need to drink 3 litres or more of water every day.

If you love animals, you may already know that camels are famous for being able to go long periods of time, in the desert heat, without drinking. Camels in the Sahara Desert have been known to survive six months or more without drinking during the winter. In the extreme heat of a desert summer, they can still go five to ten days without drinking.

So how do they do it? Some people believe it’s because they store water in the humps on their back, but that’s not true. Their humps are filled with fat, which allows them to go a long time without food.

Camels can go a long time without drinking because their internal body temperature can vary much more than a human’s, which allows them to withstand high temperatures without needing to sweat to cool their bodies. Camels also have specially-shaped elliptical blood cells, which promote blood flow and don’t allow blood volume to drop when fluid levels drop. These factors allow them to survive in harsh desert climates without water for days at a time.

And then we waste water as if there is NO tomorrow!

How To Cope With Renal Impaired Function

Kidneys are bean-like shaped organs located at the small of the back.
Although we have two of them, one can still get you by.
The main functions of kidneys is to store electrolytes, salts and minerals and to excrete waste from the body through urine.
When kidneys experience dysfunction, the body will become lethargic, lose appetite, muscle cramps and drowsiness

You can improve kidney function by making certain changes to your diet and lifestyle.

The following tips should help improve kidney function and promote longevity

  • Water Hydration Technique
From time to time we go for long periods without drinking water, leading to thirst and dehydration, and we normally gulp the first glass of water within 15 seconds. Have you ever given thought to what this does to your body? No right? I don’t blame you.
The truth of the matter is that when you gulp water quickly or any fluid for that matter, you apply immense amounts of pressure to your kidney function. How? Since one of the main functions of kidneys is to balance body fluid level in the body and dump large amounts of it into the blood stream, which kidneys will be required to balance out (urine production).
  • Drinking
Drinking just a mouthful of fluids will balance this out by reducing pressure on the kidneys and improving hydration.
  • Keeping Your Weight Under Control
Make sure your weight is always kept under control. If you are obese or overweight, you run the risk of suffering diabetes, a risk factor for kidney disease. Do away with high calorie, processed carbs and high fat foods. Eat foods rich in nuts, seeds, lean meats and veggies instead.
  • Exercise
Exercise can help improve mobility and circulation, and work alongside your diet to maintain your weight level. Do at least 30 minute sessions three times a week. These could be swimming, running, biking, walking and weight training
  • Control Blood Pressure
Blood pressure, referred to as hypertension can lead to kidney disease. Prevent this from happening by reducing salt intake levels.
  • Leave Out Toxins
Ensure that toxins are left out of your body. Based on research by the National Kidney Foundation, consistent use of prescription medications, pain relievers and illicit drugs can significantly damage your kidneys. Avoid the consumption of these as well as foods that contain pesticides and chemicals.
  • Watch Protein Intake
Be on the look for your protein intake. If your kidneys are functioning properly, wastes are eliminated and proteins remains in the blood stream. If the kidneys are weak, protein may not get separated from the waste. If you have poor kidney function, avoid too much of protein rich foods as it could lead to a high-protein diet. Follow RDA guidelines of between 10 and 35 % of your overall daily intake of caloric.
